I served as Chief Executive of Aylesbury Vale District Council for 13 years, from 2006 to 2019. I thought it was one of the most transformative times for the public sector – and yet I know that today’s public sector leaders face even more challenging and interesting times to come.

Many council CEOs join for just five or even three years before moving to pastures new – I was determined to make a difference, see through my plans to fruition and take responsibility for the decisions I made.

The results have been… as mixed as I would expect them to be. One of the key lessons I offer is that you won’t get everything right – especially in times of change.

But it’s better to be wrong sometimes, make agile decisions and move forward with a committed leader and a motivated workforce, than to be stuck in the past.

And I was right a lot of the time. AVDC pioneered cloud services, digital transformation, the provision of subscription commercial services and so much more that we are truly proud of.

I have the operational, outcome, leadership and management credentials to offer my services to any public sector organisation facing today’s challenges, from cost-cutting to automation, transformation to outright extinction.
